Take it from me babe, when it comes to lips and lashes, there’s no need to follow outdated beauty rules. As Black women and women of color, we know that the right lip and lash products can elevate any look and make a bold statement. So let me break down 10 makeup rules that you should absolutely ignore when it comes to lipsticks, lashes, and liners.

  1. Matte lips are the only “grown-up” choice – Matte lips are stunning, but gloss has its own power too. Don’t let anyone tell you that glossy lips are juvenile or less sophisticated. A rich gloss can add the perfect amount of shine and bring life to your lips, especially in deeper shades. So, whether matte or glossy, own it.

2. Lip liner is old and optional– Ehhhhh, not quite. Lip liner isn’t just for defining the shape of your lips — it’s an essential tool for creating a perfectly sculpted pout, especially for those of us with fuller lips. It helps define, prevent feathering, and allows you to mix colors and textures with precision. Old…nah, but a game changer, YEA!

3. You have to stick to neutral lip colors – When I tell you, I despise hearing this….so, who says women of color can’t rock bold, vibrant lip colors anyway? Stop walking around here all self-conscience!  Deep reds, purples, fuchsias — these shades were made for our skin tones. Don’t be afraid to experiment with rich, bold colors. You deserve to make a statement. Step into your light babe, own it.

4. Gloss is only for a casual look – Gloss doesn’t just belong in your everyday makeup bag; it can be high-fashion too. Layer a gloss over your favorite lipstick for added dimension, or wear it alone for a fresh, dewy finish that compliments your natural glow.

5. False lashes are too extra for daily wear – First of all…I am extra, so what’s your point-LOL. False lashes are for everyone and every occasion. Whether you want to go full glam or just enhance your natural lashes, there’s no such thing as “too much” when it comes to lashes. Well…if you live in Atlanta, maybe, lol- But hey, if you like your lashes heavy and your eyes all red that’s your business, and I’m only judging a little. Here’s the thing, if you like to turn up and down a little drama around your eyes per the occasion, get into it! I sell all types of flares.  Experiment with volume, length, and style — you can wear them daily if you want to! there will be no lash shaming around here.

6. Your lip pencil should match your lipstick – One of the best things about lip liners is the freedom they give you to create new combinations. You don’t have to match your lip pencil to your lipstick shade. Play with different liners to create a gradient effect or mix colors for a unique, personalized look. I’m so here for a nice ombre’ look. Own it LOVE!

7. Only matte lipsticks work for long-lasting wear – Now…I make a mean matte you hear me? My mattes have all day staying power. I love it. Matte lipsticks are great for staying power, but glosses and satin finishes can last too — especially if you layer with the right lip liner or seal your look with a setting spray. Don’t think you have to compromise on comfort for longevity.

8. Stick to natural lashes if you want a polished look – Natural lashes are beautiful, but sometimes you need a little extra drama to really make your eyes pop. But let me keep it a buck, natural lashes don’t get the job done in a photoshoot. In my professional artistry opinion, lashes with more volume translate better in shoots. Experiment with thicker, fuller lashes for those days when you want to turn heads or have profesional photos to take.

9.Overdrawn lips are a no-no – black women especially think this is too much, but honestly, not all women of color have full lips, and not all full lips are even. It’s all about knowing what you want to achieve and leaning into that with your look. Overdrawing your lips can be a game-changer if done right. A little overlining can help enhance your lips and create a fuller, more defined shape. It’s all about finding the right balance and using the right lip liner that complements your natural lip shape.

10. Matte lipsticks are too dry for dark skin tones – Many people think matte lipsticks can be drying, especially on deeper skin tones. But with the right formula-like HALO’s, matte lips can be bold and smooth, without the dryness. Just make sure to prep your lips with a good lip balm.

Look babe, break the rules. Experiment. Play with gloss, liners, lashes, and matte formulas until you find what works for you. Lipsticks, glosses, and lashes are meant to empower you — not limit you. So go ahead, own your beauty and wear it with confidence. I cant wait to see you in your HALO!

HALO BY ANGEL is born from a desire to inspire confidence, uplift souls, and remind us all that beauty is more than skin deep—it’s a reflection of our spirit and our story”

I created HALO BY ANGEL not just to build a beauty brand, but to redefine what beauty means. As a licensed minister, advocate, and entrepreneur, I see the need for a brand that empowers people to embrace beauty with purpose, resilience, and hope. The cosmetics industry is a billion-dollar powerhouse with a massive audience but often lacks a message of substance. HALO BY ANGEL is born from a desire to inspire confidence, uplift souls, and remind us all that beauty is more than skin deep—it’s a reflection of our spirit and our story.

In a world that often feels heavy, I offer products that spark transformation. Each lipstick, gloss, and soon-to-come skin care item is crafted with vegan, cruelty-free formulations, honoring both our bodies and the world around us. My mission is to provide luxurious, high-quality beauty products that are clean, ethical, and bold—because everyone deserves beauty without compromise.

But HALO BY ANGEL is more than cosmetics; it’s a movement. We stand with those navigating addictions, challenges, and life’s toughest moments, offering a message of healing, hope, and empowerment. Whether through a cherry-red matte lip like Cheribum or the universal glow of Prince of Peace, we invite you to experience “Beauty Beyond”—where looking good is just the beginning of feeling transformed. So, join the movement and be a part of something bigger than our independence…be apart of freedom!

I often remind myself, “I woke up this morning, and my discipline decided to give my insecurities hell, so I put on my red lipstick.” This reflects my belief that boldness begins with small, intentional acts of faith and courage. It is this perspective that drives me to merge ministry, business, and advocacy into powerful tools for transformation.

Inspired by Isaiah 61:3—“To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair”—I strive to create opportunities for others to rise from challenges and embrace their purpose.

I discovered that beauty products — like a lipstick or a gloss — could do more than make someone look good. When a message is attached, they have the power to make someone feel good. What if that swipe of color could ignite a spark of self-worth, strength, and significance? What if every application was a reminder that you are seen, valued, and loved?

I didn’t just want to sell makeup. I wanted to create a brand that inspires confidence, courage, and compassion — a brand that transforms beauty into a tool for boldness, belief, and belongingThis is my identity, my calling, and my purpose: to define and carve my own path in an industry that already has the audience, but not the message. My brand identity is clear — it’s Beauty Beyond.

“Face your fears head-on — and swipe on your red lipstick.” ~Angel
